Q patterns worth committing to memory

Most words settle the Q quickly by following it with a U, so the fastest gains come from knowing the shapes that repeat. Short QU words like QUIT, QUIZ, QUAY and QUAD cash the tile in a single move, while QUEEN, QUIET and QUOTE reward a fuller rack. The endings matter too: -QUE words such as PIQUE and PLAQUE turn up more often than players expect once they start looking for them, and knowing two or three by heart means you are never hunting from scratch mid-game.

The exception worth memorising is the small set of Q-without-U words in the list above — QI, QAT, QADI, QANAT and a handful more. They are what make a lone Q playable when no U is in reach, so a couple of them held in mind means the tile is never truly stranded on your rack.
